Common questions

A starting (or cranking) battery delivers a big burst of current for a few seconds to turn over your engine, then recharges from the alternator. A deep cycle battery is built to release a steady current for hours and to survive being drained and recharged repeatedly, which is what a trolling motor, fish finder, and lights need. A dual purpose battery blends both jobs into one case, a sensible choice for a small boat with a single battery. Bigger boats usually run a dedicated cranking battery plus one or more deep cycle house batteries.

For most active boaters, yes, though not for everyone. Lithium weighs roughly half as much as lead-acid, delivers nearly all of its rated capacity, recharges faster, and can last 4 to 10 times as many cycles, so the cost per year often ends up lower. If you only launch a few times a season or your budget is tight, a quality AGM battery still makes sense. Heavy users, kayak anglers counting every pound, and anyone tired of dead-battery afternoons benefit most from lithium.

Match voltage first: a 12V motor needs one 12V battery, a 24V motor needs two 12V batteries in series, and a 36V motor needs three. For capacity, a 100Ah deep cycle battery is the popular all-day choice for a single 12V trolling motor. To estimate runtime, divide amp-hours by the motor's amp draw at your typical speed. A 100Ah battery feeding a motor pulling 25 amps runs about 4 hours at that setting, and longer at lower speeds.

It is a poor idea. A car (SLI) battery is built for short, high-current bursts and shallow discharge, so repeatedly draining it for a trolling motor or electronics wears it out fast. Automotive batteries also lack the vibration resistance and the sealed, spill-proof construction that marine use demands. Choose a battery labeled for marine or deep cycle service instead.

Use a charger matched to your chemistry: a lithium-specific profile for LiFePO4, or an AGM or flooded setting for lead-acid. Never leave a lead-acid battery sitting discharged, because that permanently reduces its capacity. Before storage, charge it fully, disconnect it, and keep it somewhere cool and dry, topping up a lead-acid battery periodically or leaving it on a smart maintainer. Lithium batteries self-discharge slowly and store well, ideally around a 50 percent charge.

They discharge fine in the cold, but standard LiFePO4 batteries should not be charged below freezing, which can damage the cells. Many marine models include a low-temperature cutoff that blocks charging until they warm up, and some, such as the heated Dakota Lithium packs, add an internal heater so you can charge in the cold. If you fish hard water or launch in freezing weather, choose a battery with low-temp protection or built-in heating.
