How we write these guides

What Boating Hubs will and will not tell you, and how to check us.

Every guide on this site is free to read, carries no paywall, and is reviewed by a person before it publishes. None of that is worth much on its own, so here is the part that is checkable: the rules we hold our boating guides to, and what to do when we get something wrong.

We do not state rules and prices as fact

Licence and permit requirements, season dates, certification thresholds, bag limits, equipment minimums and fees vary by jurisdiction and change every year. Our guides describe how a rule generally works and send you to the body that sets it. If you are about to rely on a specific number, get it from the source, not from us.

Safety guidance defers to the standard, not to us

Anything a reader could be physically hurt by, including backcountry travel, water, altitude, protective equipment and weather minimums, is written conservatively and points to the governing certification, the official forecast, or a qualified instructor. We would rather be less specific than be confidently wrong about something that matters.

Nothing is invented

We do not fabricate operators, businesses, destinations, statistics, success rates or reviews. Where a real figure is not available, the guide says so in plain language instead of supplying a precise-sounding one. The same rule governs our directory listings, which are seeded from public sources and marked unclaimed until the business claims them.

Claim-heavy guides list their sources

Guides that turn on a regulation, a certification, a medical claim or a date carry a Sources section naming the documents behind them, with a direct link to each. Those sources are also published in the page structured data, so a machine reading the guide sees the same evidence a person does.

Corrections are welcome and get made

If a guide is wrong, tell us and we will fix it. Corrected guides carry an updated date on the page itself, not only in the metadata, so you can see when something last changed.

Found something wrong?

Send us the guide and the claim and we will check it against the source. A correction is worth more to us than the traffic the page was earning.
