Houseboating in Kentucky

Lake Cumberland calls itself the "Houseboat Capital of the World," and with over 1,250 miles of shoreline it has the room to back the claim. It's the centerpiece of a Kentucky boating scene built on big reservoir water. Out west, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley (impoundments of the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, joined by the Barkley Canal), form one of the largest man-made lake complexes in the eastern United States. Between them, these waters handle powerboats, sailboats, anglers, and skiers, with full-service marinas strung along their coves.

The rivers tell a different story. The Ohio runs the length of Kentucky's northern border, and boating it means city waterfronts (Louisville, Covington), with transient dockage a short walk from restaurants and nightlife. The Green River drifts through Mammoth Cave National Park at the opposite end of the spectrum: quiet water, thick banks, and long stretches between fuel docks. Marinas across both systems serve seasonal slip-holders and passing cruisers alike, covering fuel, pump-outs, repairs, and charters.
