Pontoon in Kansas

Prairie states aren't supposed to have boating scenes. Kansas does anyway. The Army Corps dammed its rivers into big, workable reservoirs, and those lakes now carry most of the state's on-water life: Milford Lake near Junction City, Perry Lake west of Lawrence, Wilson Lake out in the Smoky Hills. Open water stretches far enough here for real sailing, real cruising, and long fishing days that would surprise anyone who thinks of Kansas as wheat and highway.

The infrastructure follows the water. Around each major reservoir you'll find full-service marinas with slips, fuel, and repair shops, plus a scatter of smaller launch ramps and transient docks. Charters exist (pontoon rentals, fishing guides, the occasional sailing outfit), though the scene is thinner than on any coast. Manhattan, Salina, and Topeka work as staging towns, close enough to the lakes to handle supplies, meals, and a bed the night before launch.
