Sightseeing in Alaska

Tidewater glaciers calving into green water. Humpbacks lunge-feeding a hundred yards off the bow. Alaska is the trip serious boaters plan for years, and the state delivers on a scale nothing in the Lower 48 matches. The sheltered channels of the Inside Passage thread Southeast Alaska past Ketchikan, Juneau, and Sitka; Prince William Sound opens into fjord after fjord; and the Kenai Peninsula drops rugged coastline straight into the Gulf. Remote anchorages here can go days without another hull in sight.

The landmarks read like a wilderness syllabus: Glacier Bay National Park, the Tongass National Forest, the Chugach Mountains rising straight from salt water. Brown bears work the shorelines at low tide while sea otters raft in the kelp. Marinas and charter operations are thinner on the ground than in warmer states, but the hubs that exist are genuine lifelines: fuel, provisions, and moorage that unlock coastline no road will ever reach. These waters ask for respect and reward preparation.
