About Kentucky

Lake Cumberland calls itself the "Houseboat Capital of the World," and with over 1,250 miles of shoreline it has the room to back the claim. It's the centerpiece of a Kentucky boating scene built on big reservoir water. Out west, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley (impoundments of the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, joined by the Barkley Canal), form one of the largest man-made lake complexes in the eastern United States. The rivers tell a different story. The Ohio runs the length of Kentucky's northern border, and boating it means city waterfronts (Louisville, Covington), with transient dockage a short walk from restaurants and nightlife. The Green River drifts through Mammoth Cave National Park at the opposite end of the spectrum: quiet water, thick banks, and long stretches between fuel docks.     All motorized (mechanically powered) vessels must be registered with the Kentucky County Clerk's office in the county of the owner's residence, regardless of length; non-motorized craft such as canoes and kayaks are exempt. Registration must be renewed annually.

    A person under 12 years of age may not operate a motorboat of 10 horsepower or more. Persons 12 to 17 years old must possess a Kentucky Boating Safety Certificate to operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower or a personal watercraft.

    All vessels must carry U.S. Coast Guard-approved safety equipment, including wearable personal flotation devices (PFDs) for each person on board, a sound-producing device, navigation lights, and a fire extinguisher if applicable.
