About Wyoming

Nobody comes to Wyoming expecting a boating state, which is exactly why its reservoirs surprise people. Big man-made lakes sit in landscapes that run from high desert to pine forest, Flaming Gorge cutting through deep canyon country in the southwest, Jackson Lake holding glacial water under the Tetons. The distances between them are long, but the marinas on the major waters handle boats of all sizes and keep a short, hard-working season moving.

Boysen, Glendo, and Buffalo Bill carry much of the state's boating traffic: big open water for powerboats, skiers, wakeboarders, and sailors, with room to spread out. Marinas on these reservoirs cover the essentials: fuel, transient slips, launch ramps. And the scenery does something no coastal marina can match: the Wind River Range, the Bighorns, or the Red Desert standing over the water, wilderness in every direction from the boat.

Charters here mean fishing. Guided trips target trout, kokanee salmon, and walleye on reservoirs with strong fish populations, and a good local guide turns a big blank lake into a map of productive water. Bareboat chartering never took hold on these inland lakes, but the marinas connect visitors with guides readily enough. The season is short and intense. Plan early if you want a slip or services at the popular marinas, because the calendar doesn't leave room for improvising.

  • Boat Registration

    All motorized watercraft (any boat with a motor, gas or electric, regardless of length), must be registered with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Non-motorized craft, including unpowered sailboats, canoes, and kayaks, are exempt. Registration is issued for a one-year or three-year term and must be renewed before it expires.

  • Boater Education

    Wyoming does not require boater education for any operator, there is no state safety-certificate mandate at any age, though a course is strongly recommended. The one hard rule is age-based: a person under 16 may not operate a motorized vessel or PWC unless an adult 18 or older is aboard and responsible for it.

  • Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Decal and Inspection

    All watercraft entering Wyoming, regardless of state of origin, must undergo an AIS inspection and display a valid AIS decal. This is crucial for protecting Wyoming's waters.

  • Fishing License

    Any person 14 years of age or older must possess a valid Wyoming fishing license to fish in the state's waters. Licenses can be purchased online or from authorized vendors.

Late May through early October covers the season. July and August bring the warm weather that watersports demand; spring and fall run cooler but fish better, with far fewer boats to share the water.
02Do I need a special license to operate a boat in Wyoming?
No, Wyoming requires no boating license or safety course for any operator, at any age. The only age rule: anyone under 16 can't operate a motorized boat or PWC unless an adult 18 or older is aboard and responsible for it. A safety course is optional, but on water this remote, the education is worth having regardless.
03Are there boat rental options available at Wyoming marinas?
Yes: pontoons, fishing boats, and sometimes personal watercraft at many of the larger reservoirs' marinas. Peak-season demand outstrips the fleets, so reserve well before you arrive.
