About Wyoming

Nobody comes to Wyoming expecting a boating state, which is exactly why its reservoirs surprise people. Big man-made lakes sit in landscapes that run from high desert to pine forest, Flaming Gorge cutting through deep canyon country in the southwest, Jackson Lake holding glacial water under the Tetons. The distances between them are long, but the marinas on the major waters handle boats of all sizes and keep a short, hard-working season moving.

Boysen, Glendo, and Buffalo Bill carry much of the state's boating traffic: big open water for powerboats, skiers, wakeboarders, and sailors, with room to spread out. Marinas on these reservoirs cover the essentials: fuel, transient slips, launch ramps. And the scenery does something no coastal marina can match: the Wind River Range, the Bighorns, or the Red Desert standing over the water, wilderness in every direction from the boat.

Charters here mean fishing. Guided trips target trout, kokanee salmon, and walleye on reservoirs with strong fish populations, and a good local guide turns a big blank lake into a map of productive water. Bareboat chartering never took hold on these inland lakes, but the marinas connect visitors with guides readily enough. The season is short and intense. Plan early if you want a slip or services at the popular marinas, because the calendar doesn't leave room for improvising.
