• Boating Safety Education

  Anyone born on or after July 1, 1972, must possess a Maryland Basic Boating Safety Education Certificate to operate a motorized vessel. This certificate is obtained by completing an approved boating safety course. Operators of rental vessels may have different requirements; verify with the rental agency.

• Vessel Registration

  All vessels with primary or auxiliary mechanical propulsion, including sailboats fitted with a motor, primarily used on Maryland waters must be registered with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources; non-motorized boats, including sailboats without a motor, are not required to register regardless of length. Registration decals must be displayed on both sides of the bow. Non-resident vessels registered in another state may operate in Maryland for up to 90 consecutive days.

• Age Restrictions for Operation

  Individuals under 16 years of age may not operate a motorized vessel 11 feet or longer unless supervised on board by someone at least 18 years of age who holds a valid Boating Safety Education Certificate (or who was born before July 1, 1972). There are specific rules for personal watercraft (PWC) operation, generally requiring operators to be 16 years of age or older.

• Fishing Licenses for Charters

  Recreational fishing from a charter boat generally requires a Chesapeake Bay & Coastal Sport Fishing License for anyone 16 years or older. Most charter operators will have a blanket license covering their passengers, but it's prudent to confirm this with your specific charter captain prior to your trip.
