Cruising in Delaware

Delaware packs a lot of water into a small state: the broad Delaware Bay, the shallow, sheltered Inland Bays, and the open Atlantic, all within an easy drive of each other. Lewes, the historic maritime town at the mouth of the bay, works as a gateway to both bay and ocean. Farther south, the winding channels of Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay run thin and calm, the kind of water that suits small craft and paddleboards. That compression is the state's real asset: estuary, bay, and ocean boating without ever crossing a state line.

Along the southern beaches (Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island), the Atlantic is right there, and the marinas reflect it: bigger vessels, charter boats rigged for deep-sea runs. Behind the dune line, the Rehoboth and Indian River Bays hold calm, brackish water where families cruise between waterfront communities, kids pull crab pots, and watersports carry the afternoon. A narrow strip of land is all that separates the two worlds.
