Cruising in New Jersey

The Jersey Shore is the headline, and it earns it: miles of barrier islands, wide beaches, and a string of inlets that put you on the ocean in minutes or tuck you back into sheltered water when the swell kicks up. Cape May, Atlantic City, and Point Pleasant Beach anchor the coast as working boating towns: deep-sea fishing fleets, coastal cruisers, and waterfronts that stay busy from the first striper run of spring until the last boats come out in fall.

Behind the barrier islands, the back bays tell a slower story. Barnegat Bay in particular is the state's great family water: calm enough for a first sail or a tube run, big enough to spend a whole season exploring, and lined with marinas offering transient slips, fuel, and services. Up north, Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook sit within sight of New York Harbor, so a fishing trip can come with a skyline behind it. The trade-off is traffic: commercial and recreational boats share these channels, and the mix keeps you paying attention.
